Figuring out how much fire glass or lava rock you need may be tricky. You don’t want to spend too much or end up getting more than you need. The following calculators utilize a volume calculation that converts the area to pounds as that is the unit typically used by manufacturers selling firepit media.
It is important to note that the height dimension is not necessarily the total height of your firepit tray. Ideally you want just enough media to cover the burner without adding too much that will restrict the gas flow. Typically this is between 2-4 inches.
